Where did 2012 go!?

This year Blogger's picture uploader changed and caused me so many problems I didn't post NEARLY as much as I wanted to!! Such a bummer. I guess one if my New Years resolutions should be to find a better way so I can document our lives like I want. Technology will not best me ;) Anyways, we've had an eventful year and yet a "normal" one too. I think life is just meant to be busy :) One day I'll backtrack on my posts but until then I'll just have to settle posting pics of my cutie kids meeting Santa. We went and rode the train in Boulder City and here's what the kids asked him for: Leah- Legos
Davis- a BB gun
Grayson- a Wii
Whitney- a Dora bike

Good times.

Children

A friend of ours named their cutie baby Arrow and it remined me of this passage:

"You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable."
-The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

And here's a link that reminds me of Jeff's take on parenting ;)

The Farting Family

 (titled by Davis)

Leah and Davis just told me a story about how after they had gone to bed their dad put his booty inside their door and farted.  And it stunk.  And they had to open the window.  And it smelled like rotten eggs, skunk spray and rotten corn.

So then they all farted.  Leah and Davis real farted and Whitney pretend farted.  Davis said Leah's smelled the worst.  Leah said hers smelled the same as Davis' and dad's.

*Apparently that's not the whole story.  Jeff texted me from work, "The true story is that I walked into the room, announced I had something for Davis, then farted loud and long.  I did not walk away, that would have been rude ;)"

So when my kids have potty humor just know it's not my fault ;)

Mom stuff

We had a girls night the other day and some interesting topics came up.  I definitely want to write down my thoughts on marriage and marriage counseling because I definitely don't think I have ever expressed them correctly verbally.

I go to counseling.  I love counseling.  Jeff and I go to marriage counseling and I go by myself as well.  I love it and would call it life-changing.  So therefore I recommend counseling to everyone.  There's a stigma in our society that nobody goes to counseling unless you're clinically depressed or contemplating a divorce but I think this is a shame.  Everyone can benefit from counseling.

Usually if I recommend marriage counseling to a friend in a group setting there is at least one woman who says something along the lines of, "you just need to communicate better" or "it's all about perspective, you just shouldn't take it so seriously".  To tell this to a group of women not knowing their personal lives is soooo wrong.  Everyone has a different relationship and the private details of their life could mean they actually do need counseling and perpetuating the idea that "of course their marriage isn't "that bad"" is detrimental to them seeking help.  Perhaps in the LDS community we think there isn't emotional, verbal or physical abuse happening amongst people who were sealed in the temple, but there is.  I know in my relationship there were tough issues that needed to be resolved and I was under the impression that if I went to the temple, prayed, fasted, etc. that I could do it on my own. I read several self-help and relationship advice books and kept trying.  Years later I finally went to counseling and after the first couple sessions the counselor asked me, "Why didn't you come in sooner?".  It was a light bulb moment for me.  We're taught counseling is too expensive.  We're taught that any two faithful members of the church can have a good marriage.  We're taught that it's not "that bad" and we don't need outside help.  None of those thing are true and for me the help was worth every penny.

My current counselor isn't LDS but LDS family services refers people to her and last session she asked me, "Is there a forum where you can talk about these issues with other couples?"  I asked why she was asking and she said, "I have several LDS couples who are just like you guys."

So in essence I need to get the word out:
Marriage, and life in general, is tough and the sooner you face the issues the easier they are to work out.

And if you need a good counselor here in LV just call me and I'll give you her number :)

On a side note a speaker Time Out For Women, Julie de Azevedo Hanks, spoke on the issues she finds with LDS women in her work as a family counselor. She said that in our culture women don't acknowledge their feelings.   She gave the example of when her husband forgot to bring home an important paper for her and she reflexively said, "It's fine." but really, she was hurt that he forgot such an important thing for her.  I think she's trying to write a book on living an authentic life (she's famous for her music) but the main message of her talk was when we deny that we have feelings we start to think that we aren't allowed to have feelings and over time we get numb/depressed.  It's a serious issue and for me it includes teasing.  If you don't like it when your husband teases you that you're immature/scatter-brained let him know.  Acknowledge those feelings, it's your spirit's way of letting you know something's not right and needs to change.  I've already elaborated much more than I intended on the subject but this is an important topic for me and seriously, counseling could be life-changing for you too but you won't know until you try.

Quotes of the days

-Grayson to dad: Hey, do you know who pinched my bum?

-Whitney: Can I watch The Sound of the Music?

-All my kids were singing the do-re-mi song in the van and then Grayson yelled, "Mom, join in!"

-We watched The Wizard of Oz and Whitney said, "I don't like witches.  They scare me every day!"

-Grayson spends all his computer time on lego.com comparing prices and watching the videos, so when we were studying mummies in history Grayson was all excited to tell me, "They have a mummy lego set!"

Apparently I only remember Grayson & Whitney's cute sayings!  I need to work on that :)

Leah's Poem

The Sky
I want to see you every day.
Even when the clouds are gray.
Even when the skies are blue.
You love me and I love you.

-Leah said she was rhyming in the backyard and just came up with it.  I love it!

Wednesday's Whatever

Random conversations I want to remember:

Grayson got himself dressed.
Me: "Grayson your shorts are on backwards.  If you switch them around it will make it easier for you to put things in the pockets."
Grayson: "No, thanks."
He makes me laugh.  And for the record a few minutes later he tried to put a toy in his pocket and decided to turn them around.  See, I give good advice :)

We were all going downstairs to wrestle on the trampoline.
Grayson to me:  "I'm going to beat you like a piece of cake!"
LOL, I think he got two trash-talking sentences mixed up.

Davis tells Grayson he's wrong about something that's completely opinion based.
Me: "Davis, let him have his own opinion. Be nice."
Davis: "Then he will think he can have whatever he wants whenever he wants."
Me: "All he wants is your respect and you should give him that everyday. If we're disrespectful to each other it causes contention and fighting and it makes our family uncomfortable to be in."
Davis (after a long pause): "Whaaaaaaat?"  like the minion in Despicable Me
So much for my words making a difference haha.

Hmmmm

I feel like because it's not documented on the blog that I don't do anything.  But that's not true!  I do things.  Yesterday I took Grayson to the Quick Care because he had a fever of 102.1 and his eczema was especially red and weepy.  It was hurting him so bad he wouldn't even stand up and I had to carry him everywhere.

And then the doctor wrote a prescription for oral antibiotics that took me going to and/or calling 8 pharmacies to find.  Not to mention it cost me $75! So that's something.  Not something fun but it's something.
